The rune of Gustave (written by Janet Warrington for Megantic)

oh thou of darkest
slumbers speak
of nights ending
dreamless sleep
of all below
and underneath
the unseen caverns
of blackest deep
last sigh neath now
fall below deeps now
enfolding waters
cradle and swell
spirit ascends
and leaves the shell

The cow-nose ray.  In the year 2070, their population numbers in the billions after decades of being at the top of the food chain in the oceans (its predators had become extinct due to overfishing) and also because its bloody meat was too bitter for human taste buds. At a certain point in the 2050’s they started forming colonies for unknown reasons. A rapid unexpected rate of evolution occurred because of their vast numbers, allowing them to evolve in a leapfrog fashion unseen before in (recorded) human history.  Through this evolution they developed the ability to telepathically communicate with humans. Because they work in aggregate brain theorems, (not one ray communicates, but rather all of the billions of rays together communicate at once) it vaulted them evolutionarily farther than humans onto a plane of genius never seen before, giving them omniscient knowledge and foresight. They transcended the need to follow the course of evolution given humans and chose another route, forgoing the individualistic nation-centric and ultimately self-sabotaging route of humanity for a misunderstood (and slightly threatening to humans)  mono-sentient existence

To monitor the cow-nose ray colonies, humans have installed a network of specially designed satellites to moniter their migratory patterns.
